Murray raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set in less than 20 minutes before wrapping it up 8 minutes later.
After a tough start to the second set, he took hold of a more competitive second after a double fault at 3-3 from Daniel, and broke again to seal a two sets to love lead against the American-Born world number 87.
He swept through the final set with some very impressive shots to close out the win, giving Britain a 1-0 lead and winning his 28th Davis cup singles match in 30 games with ease
Later on, Dan Evans took on 2014 US Open finalist Kei Nishikori.
Nishikori raced into an early lead before Evans levelled with an excellent forehand.
The Japanese number one found a break to lead again before winning the set at the sixth time of asking.
At the end of a tight second set, Nishikori clinched a break in the 12th game to double his lead.
A gripping third set saw three breaks apiece, but this time Evans held at 5-6 down to set up a third set tie-break.
But the Brit couldn't consolidate, going 7-3 down in the tie break as the scores were levelled at the end of the first day.
