Godsmark's Premier League Predictions - Week 2

By Mikey Godsmark
The Premier League got off to a bang last week with upsets and drama. Week Two of the Premier League features the first Friday night game as well as crunch match: Leicester v Arsenal.

After losing 60-30 last week to Nick, I look to hit back against Arjun Chadha, a regular Powell’s Perspective writer.
Manchester United v Southampton

Jose Mourinho will mark his first home match in charge of United against Southampton who won here last year. A convincing win against Bournemouth for man United was in stark contrast to the Saints’ disappointing draw against Watford. Paul Pogba will be available to debut and Chris Smalling may well return to the side after both were suspended last week. Southampton meanwhile could see Jose Fonte return to the side as they look to stretch their run of wins at Old Trafford to three. This is a remote possibility however, as United’s star studded line-up should prove to be too good.
Prediction: Man United 2-0 Southampton
Arjun’s Prediction: Man United 2-1 Southampton
Score: Man United 2-0 Southampton

Stoke v Manchester City
Pep Guardiola’s men very nearly made a meal of what should have been a comfortable opening day win, and will be hoping to kill Stoke off a lot earlier. That being said, Stoke managed to beat City, Chelsea and Man United at home last season and will be looking to continue to Stoke Away stereotype. The Potters were poor though at Middlesbrough and didn’t look like the type of team that would be upsetting title rivals, City win.
Prediction: Stoke 1-3 Man City
Arjun’s Prediction: Stoke 1-1 Man City
Score: Stoke 1-4 Man City

Burnley v Liverpool
Burnley suffered from a disappointing start to their return to the Premier League, losing 1-0 to Swansea. They continue at home this week but come up against a Liverpool side who were extremely impressive against Arsenal, despite some defensive frailties. The Reds will look to continue their potent attacking form, although Saido Mane might well miss out through injury. Burnley broke their record transfer fee in the week on Steven Defour and he might well start. However he won’t be enough to stop Burnley from falling to their second successive defeat.
Prediction: Burnley 1-3 Liverpool
Arjun’s Prediction: Burnley 1-3 Liverpool

Swansea v Hull
Despite Gylfi Sigurdsson ruining my Fantasy Football week by starting on the bench, Swansea will be very happy having dug deep to defeat Burnley late on. This week they take on Hull, the surprise team of last week who, despite being in disarray, defeated the champions 2-1. Swansea should be a lot more wary of what the Tigers possess that Leicester and it is unlikely that they will repeat last week’s victory, especially away from home.
The win was a real surprise for Hull
Prediction: Swansea 1-0 Hull
Arjun’s Prediction: Swansea 2-0 Hull
Score: Swansea 0-2 Hull

Tottenham v Crystal Palace
Tottenham’s bid to improve on last season’s exploits took an early blow as they failed to break down a stoic Everton. The Eagles will also be very frustrated as they pressed for the whole game against West Brom before losing 1-0; however, they have strengthened their squad by signing Christian Benteke for a fee of £27m. It was Spurs’ poor start that cost them against the Tofees and they will be determined to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. Palace may be blown out of the water very early on.
Prediction: Tottenham 3-0 Crystal Palace
Arjun’s Prediction: Tottenham 3-1 Crystal Palace
Score: Tottenham 1-0 Crystal Palace

Watford v Chelsea
The latest chapter in Watford’s managerial saga continued last weekend as the Hornets played well to draw at Southampton. Younes Kaboul looks to be joining Vicarage road, although probably not in time for Saturday.  Conte’s Chelsea started with a late win against West Ham as they looked every inch the type of side that could challenge for the title. Cesc Fabregas may return to the side on Saturday as Chelsea should run out comfortable winners.
Prediction: Watford 0-2 Chelsea
Arjun’s Prediction: Watford 1-2 Chelsea
Score: Watford 1-2 Chelsea

West Brom v Everton
Both the Baggies and the Toffees put in determined displays to secure a win and a draw respectively in their opening weekends. Ronald Koeman’s side started very well against Tottenham but couldn’t keep in up as they were left hanging on towards the end. This week they will hope to put in a much more consistent performance. However, a Tony Pulis side is never easy to beat and everton are still getting used to a new manager; draw for me.
It was a mixed Start for Koeman

Prediction: West Brom 1-1 Everton
Arjun’s Prediction: West Brom 1-0 Everton
Score: West Brom 1-2 Everton

Leicester v Arsenal
It looks like life after Kante will be a frightening prospect for Leicester despite Riyad Mahrez committing to the club until 2020. Arsenal also had a poor start to the season as their defence was put to the sword at home to Liverpool before they rallied to ensure some respectability. Leicester are back at home where they were so successful last season and they remain a quality side. Despite a lack of action in the transfer window, so are Arsenal. Probably will be a draw.

Prediction: Leicester 1-1 Arsenal
Arjun’s Prediction: Leicester 2-2 Arsenal
Score: Leicester 0-0 Arsenal

Sunderland v Middlesbrough
David Moyes’ time in charge of Sunderland started in the most gutting of fashions as they fell victim to a 2-1 loss to Man City. Jermain Defoe scored the type of goal that he’s been scoring for most of my lifetime and Boro will have to keep him quiet if they hope to win. Aitor Karanka’s men would probably have to consider themselves slightly disappointed as Shaqiri’s free- kick restricted the Premier League new boys to a single point. Sunderland should have too much for Boro on Sunday and they will be tough to break down.
Defoe made a fine start to the season
Prediction: Sunderland 2-0 Middlesbrough
Arjun’s Prediction: Sunderland 1-2 Middlesbrough
Score: Sunderland 1-2 Middlesbrough

West Ham v Bournemouth
West Ham will get to use their present from the tax payer for the first time on Sunday in the Premier League as they take on a Bournemouth side who found themselves blown away by Manchester United last week. West Ham would have considered themselves to be unlucky to lose to a late Diego Costa goal on Monday and also conceded late on Thursday in the Europa League qualifier to draw. As long as the Hammers can concentrate for the full 90 minutes they should beat Bournemouth.
The Start of a new era for the Hammers
Prediction: West Ham 1-0 Bournemouth
Arjun’s Prediction: West Ham 3-0 Bournemouth
Score: West Ham 1-0 Bournemouth
